1. Kim mentioned someone in the community needing some help. BobNec said there are others too. After discussion, it was decided that Jeff@cannonbeach.org would serve as the recipient of donations and would maintain a volunteer list of those willing to help out with such things as picking something up, dropping something off, some labor, etc. The idea was to help out that currently in need, but also to be ready to help out in the future. Make donations payable to Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, but be sure to designate that it is for the "Helping Hand" fund.

2. John Sowa came from Brooklyn, then spent years in the corporate world in Chicago before becoming a trained Cajun Creole chef. He opened Lil Bayou in Seaside after coming out to visit his wife Debbie's parents and making a visit to Ecola Point. When the success and ensuing time commitment of Lil Bayou became too much, he sold it in 2007 and downsized to Sweet Basil's Cafe (www.cafesweetbasils.com) in Cannon Beach. Not only was the size of Sweet Basil's a change, so was the fare - natural, organic. Because the restaurant is so small and the kitchen is only separated by a counter, John is in constant contact with his guests. The restaurant seats 12 people - reservations are advised. His specialty is lunch with 36 items on the menu. He just added a monthly Cajun Creole night - the last Saturday of the month. He and Glynis Valenti just recently opened Wild Vines Wine bar (www.wildvinescb.com) next to Sweet Basils. 5. BobNer warned of the danger of discounting and how Cannon Beach's "crème de la crème" reputation is something which took years to develop and is valuable. Discounting will erode it. Jim advocates building relationships. People are much less likely to be looking for or expecting a discount if they have a relationship with the owners/managers/staff of a business.
She first managed Inn at Cannon Beach, then a Best Western affiliate, then became the first manager of Ocean Lodge when it opened 7 years ago.Her approach at Ocean Lodge is to create the feeling of a second home for guests.
1. General response to WOW (Women Only Weekend) was that most of the visitors to shops and restaurants did not know of the event before getting to town or before being asked. Consensus was that the WOW should become an annual event. Next year publicity needs to start in July or August. Jim at Tolovana Inn reported that notice went out by e-mail to 500,000 people, but did not result in a lot of rooms rented. They did get some phone calls, mostly wanting to know what pampering services would be available at the hotel. Jim says next year they will offer services. Carmen said her spa at Sea Ranch RV was scheduled full. Margo reported that Saturday night was also Customer Appreciation Night at her shop (Maggie & Henry) and at several other shops. This is an event started by Abbas and Jill at Purple Moon several years ago. Margo says traffic was way down. Wendy said Ocean Lodge (who started WOW a couple years ago) was full on Saturday night. Their 3pm-530pm Saturday reception had 30-40 people and the 10pm pajama party had 12 attendees. Valerie recommended fewer events on the schedule and a strong focus on "Shopping and Pampering". Jim at IceFire Glassworks said it was poor weekend at his business. Stephanie said the same. Karen at Take Care said she served cocktails with food and had a decent turnout. George reported that sales at El Mundo For Men were ok - about the same as last year, but the best hour of the day was between 6 and 7pm - influenced by WOW. His gallery had no one come in inquiring about WOW even though pink W signs were posted in the windows. Joyce at NW by NW Gallery said it was quiet there. Bob said a couple business owners asked him why they were not included.
2. Consensus was to set the 2010 date for Women Only Weekend for Nov 12-14. [Mark your calendar now].
3. Karen Myhr showcased her business - Take Care - an Interactive Spa Boutique - located downtown in Loblolly Square. There are two sides to her business - Retail and Services. She encourages local business by offering a first time $10 discount and continued $5 discount. Her services include manicures, pedicures, facials, etc. She is closed Wed and Thurs in winter. She passed around her menu of services, a retail list of her products and samples of some of her products. Visit her shop to really appreciate what she has to offer, but right now you can click www.takecarecannonbeach.com to learn more. Valerie and Margo both gave testimonials for Karen's services.
4. Classical pianist Stephen Beus will perform at the Coaster Theatre Sunday 3pm. Ticket are $15 at the box office in advance or at the event.
5. Wendy announced that there will be a Tunnel meeting with the state in January. This will be an opportunity for input. Date to be announced later.
6. George brought up the topic of high water on 101 causing the road to be closed to all but trucks and high profile vehicles. George expressed concern that this recurring event is very bad PR for the area. He would prefer that this problem be dealt with prior to expanding the Highway 26 tunnel to accommodate larger trucks. He described his experience yesterday in having a wave created by a truck crash over the hood of his minivan killing the engine as he was shuttling his kids to school. Others agreed fixing this recurring problem is a high priority.
7. The power was out for 25 hours beginning Monday around 4pm. Pacific Power brought a generator in behind Cannon Beach Mall to supply the downtown, but before it could be turned on, normal power was restored, but not before more than just a few refrigerators yielded spoils.
8. Next Wednesday Morning Meeting – November 25th, Mo’s , 8am. Wendy Higgins of Ocean Lodge will have the floor for Show and Tell. Bring your coffee cup. Mo’s is not open for breakfast on Wednesdays this time of year so we have the place to ourselves..

1. We went around the table and everyone expressed their take on Last weekend's SWAF. General consensus was that the crowd was good (down somewhat from prior years). It was a good crowd having a good time. There were new faces in the crowd. Money was tight, but some galleries reported sales up from prior events. Quick Draw on Friday sold out in spite of the increase in admission. The hope that the increased admission would attract more art buyers did not materialize. Bidding was down. Quick Draw/SWAF photos can be seen by clicking the Quick Draw link near the top of www.cannon-beach.net. The Hornbuckle Concert sold out at the last minute and was reported to have been a "Great Show" - two encores. After making the gallery rounds on Saturday night, people stuck around on Sunday. BobNec suggested we add a Sunday event in 2010. Jeff reported that neighboring towns had copy-cat events this year - a form of flattery for Cannon Beach.

2. Bob Neroni and Lenore Emory of EVOO treated everyone to cinnamon rolls and bacon cheese puffs and shared their EVOO story. They found Cannon Beach years ago and wished at the time to live here. Five years ago, they found a home and business location and opened EVOO with a focus on the "Art of Cooking". The food, for the most part, is organic, free range with care to only offer seafood not on the endangered list. They offer classes, catering and retail. Their Dinner Show is a four course wine dinner prepared as you watch. It is served Thu, Fri & Sat 7pm to 930pm. [I can tell you from my own experience - this is a must .. George] Go to their freshly updated website www.evoo.biz to see their schedule and offerings.

3. Women Only Weekend (WOW) is this weekend. Wendy passed out pink 8.5x11 sheets with a big W and "Women Only Weekend Participant" for businesses to put in their windows to let people know that they have something special going on. There is a flyer listing businesses who got their info to Wendy early enough, but if your business has any kind of special offering, contact Wendy@oceanlodge.com to get your pink sheet. The flyer can be found by clicking the WOW link near the top of www.cannon-beach.net.

4. SWAF apparel is still available. Long sleeve tees ($22.50 to $25), Qtr Zip Sweatshirts ($44 to $49.50) and Hooded Sweats ($37.50 to $43.50) are available and the Chamber Also wine ($20) with the SWAF 2009 Logo (signed by the artist) is available at the Chamber or at Oregon Gallery. see http://www.cannonbeach.org/swaf2008/merchandise.pdf.

5. The annual meeting of the Historical Society will be Nov 21 at 9am at the History Center. John Williams and George Shields will be honored.
6. Margo Dueber is looking for an artist who can do two "quick" caricatures for her. mdueber@opusnet.com
