1. Everyone introduced themselves.
Two new people were in attendance. Jean Furchner – Cannon Beach Library
President and Ron Jaber – Coast Heating and Cooling (503-440-6975 <a

Beach business).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>2. Jeff: I came on
as the Executive Director of the Chamber on September 4th to help rebuild
confidence and support. At that time there were 168 paid members. Today there
are 259. Before coming to CB, I worked in Portland as a Housing Development
Coordinator for Human Solutions Inc. My final project was completed using
18-hour days and involving 212 volunteers on “build day” on a
97-unit Arbor Glen complex. This project included a community garden and two
“green” playgrounds for the more than 200 children that live at
Arbor Glen. It was completed on my last day. I am currently working on an
OPB style sponsorship program for the Chamber and will likely be calling on
each and every one of you in the days ahead. I have been working with Nala of
the Haystack Rock Awareness Program and a good many others on Puffin Festival
in April around Earth Day to welcome the puffins back. Other things in the
works are a Music Fest (possibly folk) and a Literary Program replacing the
previous Haystack Program which involving Portland State University. This event
will be off-season. A few years ago, I made a trip to Tibet. My good friend Dr.
Celdedra Gildea started a program to help support a monastery of Buddhists
nuns. She asked me to join her on a trip to the monastery. It was a 5 week
trip, three days of which involved traveling in a 4 wheel drive vehicle along
narrow roads carved out of the mountainside – and through river beds
- just to reach the 15th century monastery. We continue to work with the
nuns on self-sufficiency projects and arrange food and supply runs up to the
monastery. <o:p></o:p></p>

Cannon Beach Chamber (see upcoming list below). Mo’s is closed for
breakfast but coffee is available. Bring your own cup.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><br>
1. Wendy started off by asking
everyone to be respectful in response to what others have to say so as not to
discourage or squelch the opinions and ideas of others.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>2. George: There
has been a request by one of the upcoming "Show & Tell"
businesses to have that WMM at their place of business. Discussion
followed and several people expressed their concern for disrupting the
continuity of having WMM's at the same location. Further discussion was
about changing the day or time of the WMM's on occasion. Again, the consensus
was to be consistent with the day, time and place of the meetings.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>3, Gary: Savor
Cannon Beach (March 12-14) is getting closer and there is still an
opportunity for a Sunday morning event if anyone in interested. Any
business with an idea or event to tie into the weekend is to let Gary
know ASAP. It's still not too late to get included in the some of the
promotion. Businesses could combine efforts with the sale of packages
including lodging. Get creative. Talk to your neighbors. Julie says a
press release is going out now from CBBA.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>4. Carol: Business
after Hours at the Gazette last Thursday went very well. Approx 40 people
enjoyed wine, food and each other's company at the Gazette office above
Purple Moon<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>5. Carol: Gazette
Show and Tell: Carol grew up in Portland and visited he coast often with
her family. Her husband Steve, from Nebraska, came to Oregon for college
and they met at that time. Steve is an old school journalist, having
worked in nearly all aspects of the business. Carol earned a Arts
Administration degree from Oregon State, then went on for her Masters at
University of Washington. She worked for the Portland Opera in Marketing,
set up the box office for the newly constructed Hult Center in Eugene.
She went back to Nebraska with Steve and they began buying small
community newspapers and eventually had 24 of them before their four
children (all currently attorneys) and 5 grandchildren pulled them back
to Oregon. They sold off some Nebraska papers and began buying Oregon
Coast papers. The Gazette was the first, followed by the Seaside Signal
and the Tillamook Headline Herald. The Gazette is published every other
week on Thursdays with a circulation between 2500 and 3000 depending
on time of year. There are 6 or 7 other publication per year
including Stormy Weather Arts Festival, Spring Unveiling, Haystack
Holidays, etc. The focus is on community. Carol likes happy stories.
"There is already too much doom and gloom out there."<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>6. George: At
yesterday's Chamber Board Meeting, it was decided to place a 1/3 page ad
in the 2010-2011 edition of Oregon Coast Magazine's Highway 101 Mile by
Mile Guide. This guide has a print run of 300,000 and is distributed up and
down the coast and throughout the state. It is hoped that Cannon Beach
businesses will purchase ads to create a full page or even a Cannon Beach
spread. The ad(s) will run next to Cannon Beach's free mile marker
listing. Contact Rob Spooner at robert@ohwy.com to be included.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>7. Tim: The
Chamber Board also decided yesterday to allocate $2000 to an overhaul on
the Chamber website - www.cannonbeach.org (not to be confused with
www.cannon-beach.net). The site when completed in approx 6 weeks will
have a consistent look - like that of the front page now. Navigation will
be simplified with cascading menus to facilitate searches. At the bottom
of the cascading will be pages for chamber members with photos and text
and a link to their site. Tim's analogy is the iphone.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>8. George: The
Chamber is organizing committees and sub-committees for events, projects,
etc and is seeking volunteers. Sheets were passed around with the current
preliminary committee members listed. People were asked to look them over
and remove their name or add it as appropriate. Some of the names on the
list were from last year's committees. The committees include Facilities,
Marketing, Website/ Magazine, Events, Sandcastle, Stormy Weather Arts Festival,
Haystack Holidays, Bylaws and Finance. If anyone could help out with any
of these, even in a small way, please e-mail chamberboard@cbor.us.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>9. Kim: The Cannon
Beach Gallery Group's new quarterly brochure is out. Kim brought a box of
brochure for people to take to their businesses. More are available at
Bronze Coast Gallery. The brochure features the Gallery Groups Sponsors
and Members. It is divided into three sections; January | Winter on the
Coast, February | Heart to Heart and March | Savor Cannon Beach.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>10. Lesle: With the New Year
here, this is a good time to do some website maintenance - 1. Change copyright
date to 2010. 2. Check Google Map to be sure your business is properly located.
If not drag it where it belongs. 3. Look at or create your Google
Analytics account.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>11. Abby: The Lumberyard
Rotisserie and Grill has moved to a year-round 5-day schedule - closing Tuesday
and Wednesday.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>12. JeffJ: Future Business
after Hours will take place each 2nd Thursdays at 430pm - Feb 11 at
the Lodges at Cannon Beach, March 11 at Duane Johnson Real Estate, April
8 at EVOO and May 13 at Sea Ranch RV Resort.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>13. JeffJ: The Chamber
newsletter is being retooled and will go out weekly on Thursday. Deadline for

<p class=MsoNormal>14. George: Measures 66 and
67. Ballots are due in mail Friday or can be dropped off at ballot boxes
till Tuesday Jan 26 - Including City Hall. Phil Knight (Nike) recently
spoke out against these measures calling them "Oregon's Assisted Suicide
Law II" saying they would give Oregon the highest income tax rates
in the country and further the already high unemployment rate in Oregon.<o:p></o:p></p>

$10 per month for weekly Wednesday classes. If interested, let Jeanie know now
(<a href="mailto:jeaniehallmclaughlin@hotmail.com">jeaniehallmclaughlin@hotmail.com</a>)
or at the meeting tomorrow. She wants to have the class immediately following
the WMM at Mo’s. Rigoberto, a Spanish-speaking employee from Mo's will be
there for role play practice.<o:p></o:p></p>

1. Margo and Paul Dueber talked and showed
big-screen slides (ala Tim Krupa) about their business. MAGGIE & HENRY is a
blend of the two original stores specializing in casual comfort for both women
and men. Lots of natural fiber product with a distinct leaning toward
“green,” striving to find the best of the best that will give you
great quality, forward yet casual fashion and, most important, garments that
you can truly relax in. The store is downtown in Sandpiper Square
(503-436-1718). The website and online catalog is at <a
href="http://www.maggieandhenry.com/">www.maggieandhenry.com</a>. Locals
receive a 10% discount. Everyone at the meeting was given a $10 gift
certificate.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>2. Last weeks meeting ended
before everyone got to weigh in on how December and 2009 overall ended for
their business. Once again, the general gist was that December was better than
last year when Portland was snowed in for two weeks, but not as good as hoped
for or as previous years. George reported that he observed fewer people than
ever (excluding those two weeks last December) for December and tight money.
2009 matched 2008, which was a very disappointing year. John said he has had
several people ask him at his restaurant why there are so few people in town
– inquiring if CB does any promotion. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>3. Several people in the
meeting were present at the NWACT/ODOT meeting in Scappoose last week. George
reported that his take was that ODOT would like to do the road surface lowering
at the same time as replacing the old timber lining. If that is something which
will cause extended closure and therefore something which we want to prevent,
then we need to be diligent, as Jeff stressed. Patrick pointed out that part of
the desire to accommodate larger trucks is to have Hwy 26 serve as an
alternative to Hwy 30 in case of landslides or other closures – a
“redundant” route to 30. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>4. Jeff: The first Business After
Hours will be tomorrow (Thursday) at 430pm at the Gazette office downtown above
Purple Moon next to Morris’s Fireside. Theresa says wine and snacks will
be served. These business mixers are intended to offer people the opportunity
to learn about businesses in a social environment. Next month will be at
the Lodges at Cannon Beach, next to Inn at Cannon Beach in Tolovana. All are
welcome.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>5. Pia: Saturday, January 16,
2010 2nd Annual “All You Need Is Love” Student Benefit Concert In
Memory Of Elliott Hearing. Coaster Theatre 108 N Hemlock 7:00pm $10 at the door
Proceeds benefit Cannon Beach Search and Rescue and Coaster Theatre. A Pacifica

Morrison.. Call 436-1242 for info.<br>
6. Cannon Beach resident/County Commissioner Bob
Mushen has a special session scheduled for Wednesday January 20 at 9am at his
home at 148 E Van Buren St. Doug Barker will give a lecture on tsunami
awareness. Those attending will have an opportunity to air concerns and ideas
with Commissioner Mushen. Email <a href="mailto:jpmushen@aol.com">jpmushen@aol.com</a>
or call 206-728-2020 for more info.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>7. Patrick: Meetings are
continuing as a 1% increase in the City’s Motel Tax is discussed. Nothing
is set yet, but a 5 person commission comprised of 3 people from lodging, 1 from
the Arts and one from the public at large, is being considered as the group who
will administer the anticipated $300,000. This amount is 70% of the $430,000
total. George said he would like to see the city show its support for the
business community, in light of the current prolonged recession and the years
that the city has not spent anything on marketing, by devoting more than just
the required 70% to marketing Cannon Beach. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>8. BobNec: A source of financial
support that has not been tapped as much it could be is second home owners.
Bill commented that second home owners have stepped up to support the Food
Pantry, which by the way is open every Wednesday. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>9. Linda: Cannon Beach is not represented
on the Clatsop County Commission on Children and Families. It should be. This
group is an advisory committee to the County Commissioners. To apply to be on
that board/commission, contact Linda at 503-440-3909 <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>10. Stan: More marketing of Cannon Beach needs to take
place. Stephanie suggests “outreach” to new areas and
publications by individual businesses and as a whole.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>11. Bill needs signatures right away to be included in
the ad in support of the Cannon Beach Trail. Donations to pay for the ad would
also be appreciated. - Contact <a href="mailto:billbennett@seasurf.net">billbennett@seasurf.net</a>.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>12. Jeff, Tracy: Volunteers are needed to
complete the events committees for 2010. Tracy is looking for someone to chair
the Stormy Weather Arts Festival. She wants to see the Chamber hire an events
coordinator as soon as funds allow. She says events such as SWAF are too much
for volunteers alone. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>13. Jenee recommended that before hiring someone
to do construction or repairs, find out if they are members of NCBIA (North
Coast Building Industry Association). Her company Pearce-Sunnel is. <o:p></o:p></p>

name in the paper as a Trail supporter along with Friends of the Cannon Beach
Trail. An optional $10 donation to help pay for the ad would be appreciated.

<p class=MsoNormal>2. Jenee: Bob Mushen
County Commissioner will begin January 12th with a biweekly
opportunity to air concerns and ideas. Alternate Tuesdays at 815am at his home
– 148 E Van Buren, Cannon Beach. Speakers will be there. Jan 12 –
Mark Thompson, Business Counselor at CCC. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>3. Kevin Magee and Meagan
Hughes: Mo’s opened in Newport in 1946. There are now 6 restaurants on
the Oregon Coast. Orders are still hand written and clipped up for kitchen
staff to fulfill – the old fashioned way. Mo’s Cannon Beach has 52
tables. The seating and atmosphere is designed to accommodate families. Senator
Robert Kennedy, during his presidential campaign, ate chowder at Mo’s and
took some with him on the road. Mo’s is famous for their clam chowder.
500,000 pounds are produced a year, some packaged and shipped to grocery
stores. Mo’s is community oriented, no charitable request is refused. A
drawing was held and three winners each received an item of clothing from
Mo’s gift shop, a gift certificate and a turkey. John Sowa, Gary Hayes
and Kathy Klezcek were the lucky winners. George pointed out that among other
distinctions; Mo’s has now hosted the WMM more than any other venue. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>4. Gary: Savor Cannon Beach plans
are moving ahead. To be included in the advertising/PR, one must have their
info to Gary by Jan 15th. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>5. We went around the room
reporting on the state of the economy as experienced by our businesses. Most
people reported a December as good if not slightly better than last December.
All were quick to add that last December was a disaster with the snow and ice
that crippled Portland and the Coast Range for two weeks. Some reported their
worst December ever. Others reported that it was not bad at all for them. Those
who compared 2009 to 2008 made similar comments.<br>
6. Jeanie McLaughlin passed around a signup sheet
for a Spanish class to last half an hour each Wednesday following the WMM. The
cost is $10 per month. She needs approx 10 people. The class would go for 2
months. For details: 436-2412 or <a
href="mailto:jeaniehallmclaughlin@hotmail.com">jeaniehallmclaughlin@hotmail.com</a>.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>7. Jeff Jewel: NWACT and ODOT
will be holding a meeting tomorrow at 1:00pm. Among the agenda items are a
discussion between local jurisdictions, ODOT, and the Oregon Trucking
Associations regarding the proposed scope of work on the Dennis Edwards Tunnel
on Hwy 26 between Cannon Beach and Portland. The meeting will be held at the
Scappoose Fire Hall, 52751 Columbia River Hwy (north end of town just off Hwy
30). Anyone interested in attending please let Jeff know (<a
href="mailto:jeff@cannonbeach.org">jeff@cannonbeach.org</a>). All those going
will meet up at the Chamber at 10:15am and carpool from there. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>8. Margo, Tracy, Tim, George: The
Chamber board met yesterday for its second and last 4-hour Retreat session.
Committees and Events for 2010 have been identified. Volunteers are now needed.
With the goal of spreading the work over more people and not burning volunteers
out, all committees and sub-committees will be set up now for all projects and
events. Margo encouraged those called upon to give of their time and expertise
promising it would be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Standing
Committees are Marketing (Board Liaison Tim Krupa), Events (Board Liaison Tracy
Abel), Membership (Board Liaison Carol Hungerford), Finance (Board Liaison Tim
Krupa Treasurer), Facilities (Board Liaison Mark Piscitelli). Sub-committee
under Marketing is Website/Magazine (Jim McDonald), Sub-committees under Events
are Sandcastle (Kelli Taylor), Stormy Weather Arts Festival (Tracy Abel) and
Haystack Holidays (Margo Dueber). A current Ad-Hoc committee is By-Laws (Board
Liaison Rich Mays). Committees will be kept to manageably numbers and
sub-committees formed when necessary. The liaison forms the committee and finds
potential committee members. The committee liaison, George Vetter (President)
and Jeff Jewel (E.D.) pick the members. Committees run by Robert’s Rules
of Order. Each Committee chooses its Chair. Each Chair appoints a secretary.
Notes from committee meetings are submitted to the committee members, the board
and the E.D. no later than 4 calendar days after the meeting. Committee
liaisons or their designees report to the board at board meetings. Contact the
Chamber Board at <a href="mailto:chamberboard@cbor.us">chamberboard@cbor.us</a>.

<p class=MsoNormal>9. Jeanie: Tonight at 6pm is Day of the
Kings celebration at Elk Creek Terrace Apartments. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>10. Elaine: Loan rates at US Bank have never been
lower. When questioned by Robin, Elaine said that they would probably not stay
this low for long.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>11. Melissa: There is an opening on the Parks and
Community Services committee. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>12. Melissa: The City Council voted last night
to improve the lighting at the Spruce St crosswalk to the park. <o:p></o:p></p>
