<p class=MsoNormal>3, Genevieve Johnson /
Acupuncture & Natural Medicine Clinic : Genevieve was introduced to
acupuncture while in college at Bastyr University, the largest naturopathic and
Chinese medicine school in the US. She had been a lifelong sufferer of
allergies. Through acupuncture, taking Chinese herbs, and diet therapy she was
able to overcome her allergies. After 4 years of undergraduate work, she spent
5 years studying to become a licensed acupuncturist. She worked for a time as
an acupuncturist at a drug rehab clinic, senior care center, OHSU, Integrated
Medicine Group in Portland, then on a Holland America cruise ship. She took
over Nancy Burton’s business in Cannon Beach when Nancy moved to Ashland
last year. According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture is proven to
treat over 60 different conditions. Acupuncture is known for releasing
neurotransmitters, regulating immunity, changing circulatory patterns and
releasing endorphins. A “needle” was passed around for everyone to
examine. It was much more like a very fine wire than a needle. Alaina, who had
never experienced acupuncture, volunteered as Genevieve’s subject. She
did not experience pain or even feel the needle go in. Beside acupuncture,
Genevieve offers other branches of traditional Chinese medicine; Herbology,
Manipulative Therapy, Nutritional Therapy, Qi Exercises and massage. A message
at the bottom her flyer read “please redeem this for 25% off future
acupuncture visit.” Find Genevieve at 1355 S Hemlock, Box 1292, Cannon
Beach, OR 9711, 503-436-2255, <a href="http://www.cannonbeachacupuncture.com">www.cannonbeachacupuncture.com</a>.

<p class=MsoNormal>5. Carol Lynch: 24 Wineries are
now in place for Saturday’s Wine Tour from 2-5pm (March 13). $25 Wine
Tour tickets can be purchased in advance at the Chamber. On Saturday, Mar 13,
tickets will go on sale (with wine glasses) starting at 1 pm at Coaster
Theatre. Pouring of wine will begin at 2pm at all 24 locations. Participants
will receive a glass and a hand stamp. Hand stamps will only be given to those
21 years of age or older. Look for the stamp if you are a pourer or host. Wine
is not to be consumed or carried on the sidewalks for streets. Everyone should
take it upon themselves to remind anyone so doing. Volunteers are needed by the
Children’s Center for the Wine Tour. Contact Carol <a
href="mailto:cbchildrenctr@yahoo.com">cbchildrenctr@yahoo.com</a>. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>6. Kathy: The tone at
Monday’s Tunnel Meeting in Seaside had changed from the January meeting
in Scappoose. The Truckers Association is now pushing for the vertical
expansion. As is ODOT. About 25 Cannon Beach people were in the audience. Once
again, those who spoke from Cannon Beach and Seaside were against extending the
time needed to work on the tunnel beyond that required for necessary repairs.
Three options were presented by ODOT. 1. Repair only. 2. Increase vertical
clearance by adding 2.5 ft to the top. 3. Increase vertical clearance by
lowering the roadway. Option 1 would be the least disruptive and Option 3 would
the most disruptive. David Kim of ODOT appeared to be advocating Option 2.
Alaina, who was at the meeting got the impression that ODOT has not done
sufficient testing on the roof of the tunnel to make an accurate estimate of
the time needed and potential problems created by removing 2.5 feet from the
ceiling. Patrick Nofield and Mike Morgan recommended that letters be sent to
ODOT Commissioners (<a href="http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/COMM/otc_members.shtml">http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/COMM/otc_members.shtml</a>)

opportunity. Details on that meeting next week.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>14. George: The Chamber is in the midst of
soliciting Annual Sponsors. $39,000 has been committed and more is needed to
carry out Chamber goals of coordinating and executing events, advertising and
promotion. An events coordinator is needed. $1500 & above and $3000 &

<p class=MsoNormal>19. Jeff TerHar encouraged businesses to keep
evening hours this summer. People are here and will shop if stores are open.
TerHars have been keeping evening hours for years and they add up to more money
during a summer than can be taken in during a typical November or December. The
more store that stay open, the more people will shop. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>20. Carmen: A new [pending] service is being

<h1>Featured Business<o:p></o:p></h1>
<p class=MsoNormal>Using her website as a template (<a
href="http://www.abel2manage.com/">www.abel2manage.com</a>), Tracy Abel gave a presentation
about her business, Abel Management. She noted that in these economic times
many companies and organizations do not have event planners. While not
“rocket science,” she added that she brings a great deal of
experience to all of the necessary planning details that are required to make
big events a success.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Some of these details include:<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Tracy added that while she has experience with planning both
events and meetings, she prefers the latter because of their longer process,
“often a year in advance.” She also added that her company has been
greatly involved with various medical groups and associations that require
continuing education credits.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>She was praised for her work with promoting Stormy
Weather. Asked how Cannon Beach might better promote itself as a host
location for such things as continuing education seminars, Tracy said what
makes it difficult is the distance from an airport and transportation. She
said, though, “it’s doable, we just have to focus on it.” <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>2. Gary passed out flyers with
the latest information on Savor Cannon Beach (March 12-14). 20 wineries have
been scheduled for the 3-5p Saturday Wine Tour benefitting the Children’s
Center. Let <a href="mailto:gary@coastexplorermagazine.com">gary@coastexplorermagazine.com</a>
know if you have something to add to the event schedule. Jean from the Library
announced that their NW Author Series has a speaker scheduled for that Saturday
whose topic is food. Julie says Savor Cannon Beach was mentioned in the Sunday
Oregonian and on the website of Oregon Wine and Craft. Everyone is encourage to
promote this event/weekend through their mailings lists, websites, Facebook,
Twitter, etc.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>3, Pia: The building now
housing the Coaster Theatre was built in 1924 as a roller rink. Silent
films were shown in the 20's and later on concerts were performed on a
makeshift stage in the middle of the rink. In the late 1960's Portland State
University started doing a summer series of plays on a stage they built at the
west end of the building, where the seating area is now. In 1972 Maury
Clark purchased the building and with architect Ray Watkins they transformed
the building into the theatre that it is to this day. Around this same
time the annual "Dickens Christmas Play" became a community
tradition, with townspeople dressing the part, and Jay Schwehr taking on the
role of the town's lamplighter, which he has continued to do for over 30
years. The 80's saw the arrival of theatre director Stephen Diehl and
summer seasons presented by the Mark Allen Players from Portland. During
these early years, and through to the beginning of the new millennium, Maury
Clark continued to generously support the theatre. Ticket sales in any
regional or community theatre barely cover more than half of the cost of
operations, so Mr. Clark's support was crucial to the survival of the Coaster
Theatre.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>When Maury Clark passed away, the theatre became a nonprofit
organization with both a board of Directors, and a Foundation Board whose task
was to raise an endowment for the theatre to insure its longevity. When Stephen
left the theatre in early 2002, Craig and Pia arrived and in 2003 they revived
the idea of a Summer Repertory Season of 3 plays rotating throughout the summer
months.....visitors to Cannon Beach could see any one of, or all three plays,
in a single week. A summer theatre camp for children was also introduced
and continues to grow.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>This year a year-round educational theatre program is in
place guided by Patrick Lathrop, our Educational Theatre Director, who will be
conducting workshops and classes throughout the year, as well as our intensive
2 week summer camp.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The theatre operates with a minimal paid staff, and depends
on the volunteers that perform on the stage, work back stage and staff the
front of house. Ticket sales still provide little more than 50% of what
is needed to keep our doors open, the remainder coming from grants, donors,
advertisers, generous sponsors, and various fund raising programs. For
$500.00, for example, one can become a part of our "Take a Seat"
program. You can purchase a seat of your choice and a brass plaque will
be placed on that seat with your name on it or an inscription of your choice. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The theatre is happy to work with motels, hotels,
restaurants, etc. to create packages and arrange for group rates. Performances
typically start at 8 PM and end by 10 PM. Volunteers are always welcome
and needed at the door, and they see the show for free. The theatre does see a
need for a babysitting/kidwatching service that could be of benefit to almost
any business in town. For more info. visit www.coastertheatre.com<o:p></o:p></p>
