This went to Angela Freeman who placed the closest guess to how many people are
on the WMM e-mail list (174). The weekend is filled with unveilings – and
not just in the galleries. JP’s is unveiling their new Menu. “Almost,
Maine” opens this Friday, April 30, with a no-host wine tasting in the

A one act play will be performed in the Cannon Beach Gallery over Spring
Unveiling Weekend. “After Magritte” is a Tom Stoppard play which is

Wine Bar on Saturday from 6-8pm. John at Sweet Basil’s will have specials
on Friday and Saturday night. All businesses are encouraged to

Northwest by Northwest Gallery will charge $5 at their door with proceeds to
benefit the Food Bank. Inn at Cannon Beach and Ocean Lodge will each have an

and run thru Sunday. On Saturday there is an unveiling every half hour except

Michael Burkett - Editor of the Cannon Beach Citizen and the North Coast
Citizen: Cannon Beach Citizen turns 2 years old in two weeks. It is owned by
the East Oregonian Publishing Company which owns several community newspapers
including the Daily Astorian. Community newspapers are doing better than most
because they print news not available anywhere else. The paper is printed by
the Astorian as is the Cannon Beach Gazette. Two local business owner, Valerie
Ryan and Watt Childress, write columns for the paper. The paper sometimes
features those who are not advertisers just because there is a good story.
Michael welcomes calls or emails with ideas and suggestions for stories. He
passed out, fresh off the press, the “Living Green” insert (16,500
distribution), and the “Spring Unveiling” insert (19,500

Patrick: The Council worksession last night at City Hall was well attended and
reached a “cumbaya” (Valerie’s word) conclusion. The
composition of the 5-member committee to review and evaluate requests for $
will focus on expertise with all 5 members being chosen at large. The issue was
raised as to how reservations already made would be affected by the increase.
Council will look at this. Another issue discussed was whether a member or
representative of a group requesting $ could sit on the committee. It was
pointed out that with the limited number of people available in our small town
and the fact that many people are involved in multiple groups and
organizations, it could be very difficult to populate a committee with people
who have no association with a requesting group. The tax/ordinance will be on
the next Council agenda. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

1. Carol Lynch / Cannon Beach Preschool and
Children’s Center. Carol’s prior career was Human Relations. First
in hospitals and then in technology. When her son was born, her love for
children was born with him. 5 years ago she and husband Frank moved to Cannon
Beach. Frank gave up his tech career to pursue photography. Carol took a job at
the Children’s Center. A year later the Director position became
available. Carol took it. She is proud to be part of the Children’s
Center. This is the 20th anniversary of its founding by concerned
citizens. The city put up the land and the community put up the building. The
facility is licensed (State Certified) for 36 to on site at any given time.
Currently there are 41 registered. Open 730am to 530pm, the facility is divided
between babies, toddlers and preschoolers. This is the only such facility
between Tillamook and Warrenton. For many parents, it is a critical service.
Tuition pays for only 50% of overhead. The rest comes from grants, donations
and fund raisers. Qualifications for employees are high, requiring various
certification plus an annual 15 hours of continuing education. Pay is between
$10 and $15 per hour. Help is hard to find. Most do it out of love. Carol
invited everyone to come and visit, especially if they haven’t been in
recent years. 3781 South Hemlock, PO Box 596. 503-436-1040 <a

Lesle Palmeri / Walker & Company Marketing Communication. Lesle’s
maiden name is Walker. She started her company 26 years ago before marrying.
But first she got her degree from Miami University in Ohio and went to work in
Chicago at Leo Burnett Company, in a building with 1800 other LBC employees (LBC
had 32 offices around the world at that time). She left Leo Burnett in 1980 for
a small firm in Dallas Texas that transferred her to Phoenix where she became
general manager until the day she called one of the owners to complain about
owners lack of involvement in her branch . She worked for that firm for 5
years. After a short, break from the advertising world, (she never DID
actually get a job driving a bus!) she began Walker and Company moving to
the north coast of Oregon in 1994. Her goal is to get people to rethink their
marketing strategies. She focuses on advertising, public relations and website
empowerment. She thinks that Clatsop County’s diversity ”is an
asset" that we can take advantage of. Her immediate advice to all is to be
aware of who has rightful ownership of materials being used in your marketing,
and to make sure the materials are current. Then get your message out to your
target audience… and repeat, repeat, repeat. Her services are available.

style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>4. George
reported on what happened last night at the Council Meeting regarding the
proposed 1% increase in the Motel Tax (from 6 to 7%). After hearing from about
10 people and a short discussion, Council decided to extend the conversation to
a worksession at 6pm on April 20th at City Hall. Part of the proposed
ordinance is to form a 5 member vetting committee whose function will be to
select qualified recipients to receive the estimated $230K. The composition of
that committee was a big part of the Council’s discussion. George asked
how others thought this money should be used. There was no shortage of ideas
and commentary. Bob Necker suggested that the Chamber was the best organization
and in the best position to spend this money wisely. Wendy asked Valerie to
speak about how this got started over a year ago. She (Valerie), city manager
Rich Mays and Mayor Mike Morgan got together to discuss how to assist the Arts
in Cannon Beach. Art organizations were in need of financial assistance to stay
afloat. The idea of an increase in the motel tax came up. The group expanded to
include motel owners and it was learned that State law restricts how new motel
tax money can be spent. 30% can be spent in any manner the city sees fit, but
70% is restricted. Some of the Arts organizations do not qualify. Patrick Nofield
spoke about his involvement in the committee and the open and transparent
manner in which the ordinance evolved. He expressed disappointment in the
composition of the 5 member vetting committee being changed from 3 lodging
members to 2. This had taken place without a committee meeting. George pointed
out that if the composition was left open, there could feasibly be 5 members
appointed from lodging. Kathy Klezcek asked if there was anything in the
ordinance which would ensure consistency in the PR message so as to have a
coordinated, cohesive message going out from different organizations. Nothing
in the ordinance speaks to that at this point. Russ Vandenberg talked about a
program used in Seaside where each year, 5 applicants are rewarded $5000 each
to promote events they solicit funds for. In Seaside 25% of all Motel Tax funds
go back into PR and advertising. Gary sited amounts being spent by towns
competing with Cannon Beach for visitors. The anticipated $230K is a meager
amount compared to all the others. Bob Necker expressed concern for the impact
on an organization who get awarded money one year and then do not meet
performance requirements the next year or the year after that. George
encouraged everyone to send comments prior to the April 20th
worksession to </span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"'><a

Patrick Nofield and Ben King showcased the Lodges at Cannon Beach. “Come
Live the Life”. Patrick and partners Tom Drumheller and Mike Clark
purchased property in 1999 and built Inn at Cannon Beach with the idea that
they would purchase additional adjacent property later. In 2005 they purchased
that property, but at 5 times the price of the first piece. Because of the high
cost of the property and development costs, it was decided to build condos
rather than motel rooms. Fractional ownership was chosen over full ownership to
bring prices within reach of more people. Each luxury, fully furnished, 2 and
3-bedroom condo would have 12 deeded owners with each being scheduled for 4
weeks per year (one week in each season – rotating annually). The remaining
4 weeks are for maintenance and promotion.<span style='color:black'> The
project was originally planned for 16 units but facing a weak economy, it was
decided to phase the project. Eight units were built in Phase One. Four units
are currently offered as fractionals and four are offered as full ownership.
Two-bedroom fractionals start at $79K and three-bedrooms at $99K. Home Owners
Association fees, which include everything but long distance phone, are approx
$1200 and $1700 annually. The four full ownership units are offered at $730K,
$699K, $849K and $749. All prices have been adjusted down recently to stimulate
interest. These units can rent nightly thru Inn at Cannon Beach. The Lodges are
also affiliated with and rated “Top Tier” with RCI, a network of
condo rentals. Financing is available. Contact Ben King 503-440-6310 <a

Break crowd is traditionally not good for her business, but she does get
lookers who she feels will be back later in the year. Tim at the Spa says
business was good during last week but Saturday was poor. Most business is last
minute and everybody wants a discount. Keith at the Seaside Aquarium says they
have been slammed. Pia says the theatre had a good Thursday and Saturday, but
not Friday. George says his El Mundo For Men apparel store manager, Sandy
Smith, reported that business was good and for the first time in a long time,
people were buying what they liked without laboring over price. Carmen was full

was frustrated with the power outage from 7am to 530pm on Monday. Some
businesses closed, some stayed open. Those that stayed open reported that they
did do business. Kathy encouraged making the most of these situations by having
temporary lighting available and by coordinating with other business to know
who is open so as to assist visitors in finding coffee, food and shopping
opportunities. Jeff said the Information Center closed at 1pm after having so
many irate people come in complaining. His observation was that Oregon
vacationers were more accepting of the situation than those from the Puget
Sound area. Bob Necker wants more pressure put on Pacific Power. “This is
the 21st Century, not the 19th Century”. George
says with so many trees surrounding the wires that feed us, we can expect these
kind or outages until we get our wires underground. In the meantime, we need to
make the most/best of these outages by being prepared and by being positive
with our visitors. Melissa, as a City Councilor, says she has spent time
working with Pacific Power looking at the situation. Specific trees have been
identified as potential problems and will be cut and/or trimmed. Part of the
problem is with infrastructure. Some of the poles and supports have not been
maintained properly. Bob Neroni asked about the feasibility of the City having
a backup generator. Fran suggested that the Info Center be a designated spot
with backup power and drinks, snacks and information during an outage such as
this.<span style='color:black'><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

warned of a very tenacious Malware program that he is currently dealing with on
a laptop. It is called Antivirus XP 2010 or Antivirus Vista 2010. This malware
pretends to be a virus protection program. It throws up fake security risk
screens offering to protect you by registering – for money of course. The
screens it fakes are deceivingly similar to legitimate ones. The malware
disables programs that could disable it. AVG Antivirus did not detect it.
According to what George found on the Internet, antivirus programs do not
detect it. This malware appears to only affect the user who is logged in at the
time so if there is a second user on the machine, that user can be used. Once
the av.exe file was found and removed by Malwarebytes, most “exe”
files were still disabled. Where does malware come from? It can come from
downloading software, visiting questionable or unknown websites, and other
sources. Sometimes it will show up even if you have done nothing to cause it.
Be wary of any sites that you visit while online that aren't trusted, or that
you aren't familiar with. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Gallery: Northwest art by Northwest artists is what you will find in the
gallery downtown at 232 N Spruce next to Cannon Beach Spa. Fifty Pacific
Northwest artists are represented. The gallery opened initially in SE
Portland in 1985. In 1987 a location was found in beloved Cannon Beach and in
1988 the gallery moved to Cannon Beach. Twelve years ago the old firehouse was
renovated and the gallery moved into its present home across from the City
Park, tennis courts and the Information Center. Being on Spruce Street creates
a challenge. Membership and participation in the Cannon Beach Gallery Group and
Chamber has been part of the gallery’s marketing plan from the beginning.
Three aspects of the business are 1. Retail – people who visit and
purchase onsite – mostly Seattle visitors. 2. Corporate – OHSU and
others. 3. Giving Back – financially supporting local and regional
causes. A velvet rope occasionally hangs across the door opening and money is
collected upon entry for these causes. Joyce focuses on photography and
painting while Bob’s focus is glass. Travel Oregon included the
gallery in a video “Oregon Uncovered” which is being aired
internationally. Passionate about public art, the gallery features sculptors
such as Georgia Gerber (who did a recent puffins piece of which 10% will go to
HRAP), Lillian Pitt, Wayne Chabre, and others. Bob is a writer and keeps a journal,
Joyce is into photography, but they do their art for themselves and not the
gallery. The galleries ads in Cannon Beach Magazine and Coast Explorer Magazine
were shared. Reach the gallery at 503-436-0741, <a
