the guide on the bus that brings cruise ship guests to Cannon Beach and Seaside.
Les says Sundial Travel is contracted for the tours. The next bus to Cannon

Buses leave Astoria at 9am. The first stop is Tolovana Wayside for the Haystack
Rock view and the restrooms. Then to the Chamber where guests are free to
roam/shop for about 45 minutes. Les recommends that we have simple maps
available. He says the packets that we have given out in the past have been
good. When asked how he describes the difference between Seaside and Cannon
Beach, he said Seaside is “family” and Cannon Beach is “artsy”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Nala / Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) is city sponsored with strong
community support. HRAP just had its 25<sup>th</sup> anniversary. The tufted
puffins are here. Nala observed more than 40 at a glance the other day. The
season is underway. Nala and her crew will be on the beach for all daylight low
tides. 78,000 people were greeted by HRAP last year including 70 groups. Part
of HRAP’s approach is outreach to schools to orient groups before they get to
the Rock. The most common creatures observed are anemones, barnacles and sea
stars. Nala passed around cards and everyone had fun pretending to be one of
these creatures. Friends of Haystack Rock supports the Haystack Rock Awareness
Program in cooperation with the City of Cannon Beach, promoting the
preservation and protection of the intertidal life and birds that inhabit the
Marine Garden and the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock.
Keith Chandler chairs that group. HRAP has 8 staff members. Volunteers are
welcome. The final volunteer training for this season is Saturday June 5 from
1-5p at City Hall, followed on Sunday by at-the-Rock action. Contact Nala at <a

Unveiling Weekend Report: Motels reported either full or very close to it for
Friday and especially Saturday nights. Kristine, Escape Lodging, said that on Saturday,
when trying to book restaurant reservations for guests, they could not find
anything before 830pm. Megan, Mo’s, said they were slow both Friday and Saturday,
but Sunday was good. She thinks all the activity was too far away from them.
Margo and Valerie reported good business in their apparel and book stores
respectively. [Business at El Mundo For Men was not so good]. Coaster Theatre
opening of “Almost, Maine” was well attended as was the performance at Cannon
Beach Gallery of “After Magritte”, which Margo reported will be repeated again
this summer. George reported that his Friday Unveiling was as well attended as
his Saturday one. Overall traffic was good but not what he had hoped for. Jim
at IceFire and Bob at NW by NW Gallery reported good traffic/dollars during the
week, but not what they had anticipated and hoped for on the weekend. Kathy, La
Luna Loca, felt that the crowd was more varied than in the past and that it
consisted of more than just people here for art. Bob, NW by NW Gallery, felt
that the 12 Days of Earth Day had a negative impact on Spring Uveiling.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>5. Tim
Krupa / Chamber Marketing Chair: The Chamber Marketing Committee is moving
forward with its $40k plan for marketing and PR. An RFP is being put together
for the purpose of finding an organization and/or people to carry out both
functions. The updated website is nearing completion. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>6. George
reported that he attended the meeting yesterday in Seaside where a consortium
of State, County and City representatives presented what has been done to this
point in the study of how to alleviate the flooding problem on Highway 101
between Cannon Beach and Seaside. The firm doing the study is North West
Hydraulic Consultants – the firm who just completed work on 101 in Tillamook.
Their goal is to eliminate the majority of the flooding. They won’t be able to
stop flooding that comes once in a hundred years. This was a public meeting where
residents were invited to participate. The study is expected to take thru this
Fall. At that point, the cost will be known and money will be sought. There
were about 40 people at the meeting. No further meetings were announced. Send

The 1% increase in the Transient Lodging Tax was passed by City Council last
night. It will take effect on July 1. The money is earmarked by State statute for
the promotion of tourism. The City has further earmarked it for Tourism and
Arts Programs. A 5-member commission will be appointed by the Council to review
applications from organizations for disbursement of an estimated $210K. Up to $21K
(10%) will be held in reserve for any last minute opportunities. Individuals
interested in sitting on the 5-member commission can apply at City Hall. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Rich Mays was the recipient of the Gaylord Nelson Award. 12 Days of Earth Day
culminates with Spring Unveiling this weekend.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

‘business family’, did a sneak-preview unveiling of a 25x37 canvas giclee -
“Morning Rays”. He then gave away a 12x18 paper giclee of “Morning Rays”. This
went to Angela Freeman who placed the closest guess to how many people are on
the WMM e-mail list (174). The weekend is filled with unveilings – and not just
in the galleries. JP’s is unveiling their new Menu. “Almost, Maine” opens this
Friday, April 30, with a no-host wine tasting in the theatre lobby at 7:15
p.m., curtain up at 8 pm. and a complimentary champagne/dessert reception

A one act play will be performed in the Cannon Beach Gallery over Spring
Unveiling Weekend. “After Magritte” is a Tom Stoppard play which is being

says Primary Elements Gallery will focus on demonstrations with a Wine Bar on
Saturday from 6-8pm. John at Sweet Basil’s will have specials on Friday and
Saturday night. All businesses are encouraged to “Unveil” what they can to
create more excitement for our visitors. Northwest by Northwest Gallery will
charge $5 at their door with proceeds to benefit the Food Bank. Inn at Cannon
Beach and Ocean Lodge will each have an artist featured that weekend. Gallery
unveilings and demonstrations begin Friday and run thru Sunday. On Saturday

Kathy: What is the future of Cannon Beach Elementary? New boundaries have been
drawn by the school district thus reducing the number of children at CBES.
There has been talk for years about moving the school out the tsunami
inundation zone. Melissa says safety is an all important issue. A recent
tsunami drill where the students hiked up Spruce Street took 17 minutes and
more for the smallest students.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Cannon Beach Citizen turns 2 years old in two weeks. It is owned by the East
Oregonian Publishing Company which owns several community newspapers including
the Daily Astorian. Community newspapers are doing better than most because
they print news not available anywhere else. The paper is printed by the
Astorian as is the Cannon Beach Gazette. Two local business owner, Valerie Ryan
and Watt Childress, write columns for the paper. The paper sometimes features
those who are not advertisers just because there is a good story. Michael
welcomes calls or emails with ideas and suggestions for stories. He passed out,
fresh off the press, the “Living Green” insert (16,500 distribution), and the
“Spring Unveiling” insert (19,500 distribution). Michael's radio show on KMUN
Community Radio on Friday at 930am will focus on 12 Days of Earth Day and
Spring Unveiling with guests Jeff Jewel, Ed Johnson and Valerie Ryan. Contact

The Council worksession last night at City Hall was well attended and reached a
“cumbaya” (Valerie’s word) conclusion. The composition of the 5-member
committee to review and evaluate requests for $ will focus on expertise with
all 5 members being chosen at large. The issue was raised as to how
reservations already made would be affected by the increase. Council will look
at this. Another issue discussed was whether a member or representative of a
group requesting $ could sit on the committee. It was pointed out that with the
limited number of people available in our small town and the fact that many
people are involved in multiple groups and organizations, it could be very
difficult to populate a committee with people who have no association with a requesting
group. The tax/ordinance will be on the next Council agenda. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

1. Carol Lynch / Cannon Beach Preschool and Children’s
Center. Carol’s prior career was Human Relations. First in hospitals and then
in technology. When her son was born, her love for children was born with him.
5 years ago she and husband Frank moved to Cannon Beach. Frank gave up his tech
career to pursue photography. Carol took a job at the Children’s Center. A year
later the Director position became available. Carol took it. She is proud to be
part of the Children’s Center. This is the 20<sup>th</sup> anniversary of its
founding by concerned citizens. The city put up the land and the community put

at any given time. Currently there are 41 registered. Open 730am to 530pm, the
facility is divided between babies, toddlers and preschoolers. This is the only
such facility between Tillamook and Warrenton. For many parents, it is a
critical service. Tuition pays for only 50% of overhead. The rest comes from
grants, donations and fund raisers. Qualifications for employees are high,
requiring various certification plus an annual 15 hours of continuing
education. Pay is between $10 and $15 per hour. Help is hard to find. Most do

George: The news this morning reported that the latest stats show Oregon losing
another 400 jobs and the unemployment rate still above 10%. But, Intel
quadrupled its first quarter earnings and anticipates hiring 1000 people yet
this year. Diana says she has had a nice sign in her window at JP’s for 3 weeks
and has had just two people inquire. One of them obviously did not want the
job. Others reported similar experiences. Pat Funk says there has been more
activity in the local real estate market already this year than all of last
year. Ben says they sold a fractional recently at Lodges at Cannon Beach and
financing came thru Clatsop Community Bank. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

There are 7 groups desiring and currently identified as qualifying for the
anticipated $230K of the proposed increase in the Lodging Tax. A 5-person

History Center. 2. Chorus. 3. Arts Association. 4. Gallery Group. 5. Coaster
Theatre. 6. Chamber. 7. Business Associates. Qualifying groups must have a
direct tie to tourism as per state statute and a decision passed down by the
