<DIV>Hi,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I’m Patty Coomes from Haystack Gallery. We discussed this issue
briefly at the Cannon Beach Gallery Group meeting Tuesday morning. I
called Betsy Johnson’s office yesterday about 3 PM, regarding bill 541 and 542
which both would change the current lodging tax. According to her
representative, Betsy sponsored these two bills- one on behalf of Tillamook Road
Commission, the second on behalf of the League to Cities. He also told me
he had double checked with the lawyer who wrote the bills language. The
new changes are proposed to affect only tax increases in the future, not taxes
already implemented, so nothing would change in Cannon Beach. He said that
was done specifically to ‘appease’ organizations that have been using the tax
money for tourist related purposes! He did not tell me either bill had
been pulled. Maybe something happened today?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>He said Tillamook County has terrible roads and are trying to find funds to
add to their budget in order to repair the roads. He said the League of
Cities version is more encompassing of how the collected lodging tax could be
spent, but gave no specific reason for them wanting the bill changed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>You can read the bills at: <A
href="http://www.leg.state.or.us">www.leg.state.or.us</A> Then click on
bills/laws then 2011 session then full text of measures. Again the senate
bill numbers are 541 and 542.</DIV>

According to a Feb 15th Daily Astorian article, two Senate bills
being sponsored by Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose, could change the uses for
lodging tax dollars that fall under the current law’s strict definitions. The
bills would allow cities and other collectors of lodging taxes to apply them to
more general uses, if those uses can be tied to tourism. George and others
expressed concern that if not for the current state requirement, none of the
lodging tax dollars would be used for PR and that the proposed changes would
result in no funds from any future increases being used for PR. BobNer suggested
we invite Betsy to a WMM. George will contact her.</SPAN></P>

Both the Friday and Saturday events were at about 2/3 attendance. Those who were
there were “astounded”. The speakers “blew them away”. Thanks to the Chamber,
Cannon Beach Vacation Rentals, Escape Lodging, Coaster Theatre, the lodging
establishments who offered great packages and to all those who helped. Special
thanks to Carol Knutsen-Hawes, who conceived and planned the event. George
reported that the guest at Inn at Village Centre reported that it was a great
event. Tracy said her Lush Wine Bar business benefitted and she talked to
restaurants who were busy at times when they would normally not have been.

Cannon is putting together a smart phone app for Pike Place Market. She is doing
this with Sutro, a company who does this with travel writers for higher end
destinations. The estimated cost for such an app is $40K. If all Cannon Beach
businesses listed in the city produced map, paid equally, the cost would be $115
each. It would take approx 4 months to build the app. The app would allow users
to download it onto their phones or pads (small fee $5 or less) and have
GPS convenience to everything the app contained. For info that Robyn put
together see <A
href="http://www.cannon-beach.net/photos_cb/cbTravelApp/Cannon_Beach_Travel_App.pdf">www.cannon-beach.net/photos_cb/cbTravelApp/Cannon_Beach_Travel_App.pdf</A>.
JeffT and GaryH pointed out that there are apps out there now that include
Cannon Beach and that Google and current websites already include most of the
information that would need to be gathered and maintained on an app. George
agreed saying that even if the money challenge were overcome, it would be a
major challenge to keep the app current and that you could not rely on
participants to do that without having someone designated to verify that info is
current and to solicit current info from participants. Malia thinks that smart
phone apps will become the norm in the future just like websites are now. She
thinks getting started with something, even if it is small, is a good
idea. </SPAN></P>

Philly. His father was a classic concert violinist. Aaron came to Oregon to
study at Lewis and Clark, but not music. He has since immersed himself in music.
He is passionate about music education. He visits schools regularly. He has been
doing a summer children’s workshop in Portland for years. His workshop is
designed for 8 to 14 yr olds with or without music experience. The fee is $250
for two sessions/day for two days followed by a concert. Participants will learn
how to write, perform and record their own original songs and make their own
MP3. Each child creates a song, choosing all aspects of that song. The musical
creations of each student are recorded. Aaron does an annual Holiday Concert and
would love to bring a performance to Cannon Beach. Aaron treated us to a
performance on his violin of an original composition – his first in 1996. <A
